A registered dietitian establishing a weight management program first computes their client's daily energy requirement. Weight loss or weight gain represents a physical imbalance between calorie consumption and metabolic energy expenditure. To manipulate this imbalance safely, you must determine your maintenance calories.

A calorie is a unit of energy, defined as the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius. Losing weight at a rate of 0.5 to 2 pounds per week represents a safe clinical standard. Faster loss rates often result in significant loss of lean muscle mass, electrolyte imbalances, and endocrine disruption.

The Risks of Severe Calorie Restriction

Severe calorie restriction (eating below 1,200 calories per day for women or 1,500 calories for men) triggers adaptive thermogenesis, sometimes called "starvation mode." Your body decreases its thyroid hormone output, slows cellular respiration, and decreases spontaneous NEAT movement to conserve energy reserves. Severe restriction also causes muscle atrophy, hair loss, and compromised immune function. Weight targets should scale gradually based on individual metabolic output.

For weight change, yes. For body composition and health, no. 100 calories from broccoli has a higher thermic effect and nutrient density than 100 calories from sugar, which affects satiety and glycogen storage differently.

Why did my weight loss stall?

Stalls typically occur due to metabolic adaptation (as you lose weight, your BMR naturally shrinks), under-tracking food portions, or fluid retention masking fat loss. Recalculate your targets every 5 to 10 pounds lost.

Should I eat back the calories burned during exercise?

Generally, no. Fitness trackers often overestimate calories burned by 20% to 40%. The activity multiplier in this calculator already accounts for exercise calories, so eating them back can erase your deficit.
