When people consume fewer calories than they burn, the body mobilizes fat tissue to compensate for the difference. To calculate this calorie balance, you must determine your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE).
TDEE represents the total number of calories your body burns in a 24-hour period. Unlike BMR, which represents only baseline metabolic needs, TDEE accounts for digestion, daily activities, and exercise. Eating at your TDEE maintains body weight. Creating a gap between calorie intake and TDEE drives weight change.

Weight Loss (Cutting): Creating a calorie deficit forces the body to burn fat for fuel. A deficit of 500 calories per day yields a loss of approximately 1 pound of fat per week. Safely losing fat requires avoiding extreme deficits that trigger muscle loss and metabolic adaptation.
Weight Gain (Bulking): To build muscle tissue, you need a calorie surplus alongside resistance training. A surplus of 300 to 500 calories per day supports muscle synthesis without driving excessive fat storage.
Calories establish weight change, but macronutrients (protein, carbs, fats) govern body composition changes. This calculator splits calories using a standard athletic ratio (30% Protein, 40% Carbohydrates, and 30% Fat):

Recalculate your TDEE every time your body weight shifts by 5 to 10 pounds. As your mass decreases, your energy requirements decrease, which can shrink your calorie deficit.
You may be overestimating your activity multiplier or under-tracking food portions. Try selecting the "Sedentary" factor to establish a more conservative baseline target.
Eating below your BMR for extended periods can cause severe fatigue, muscle loss, nutrient deficiencies, and metabolic adaptation. Deficits should scale from TDEE, not BMR.
